Vacant Lots
Become Flower Farms. Quilen Blackwell — CNN Hero of the Year, 2025

Southside Blooms grows what it sells. Chicago Eco House, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit behind the shop, has turned vacant lots across Englewood and Chicago's South and West Sides into solar-powered flower farms — employing local young people to grow, arrange, and deliver every stem. In 2025, co-founder Quilen Blackwell was named CNN Hero of the Year for the work.

02 Our Story

One Lot.
Then Six.

Quilen and Hannah Blackwell started Chicago Eco House in Englewood, turning neglected lots into growing space. Southside Blooms launched in 2019 as the flower side of that work — a farm-to-vase florist that reinvests in the same neighborhoods it grows in.

What started as one lot has grown into a network of solar-powered urban flower farms across Chicago's South and West Sides, with the shop now expanding into North Lawndale. Every arrangement starts as a seed in Chicago soil — grown, cut, and arranged by local young people who are paid for the work.

The name on the door is honest about what this is: a florist first, a jobs program built into every bouquet second — or maybe it's the other way around.

“I love the mission of Southside Blooms! I also love that I'm able to share their beautiful bouquets outside of the Chicago area. I shipped to Ohio and they arrived the next day, as promised, and they held up very well with the shipping. I'll definitely be using Southside Blooms for my floral needs.”
